There are a lot of leggings out there, and a lot of them say "eco." We'd rather show you what we actually do and let you decide. Here's what goes into a pair of Jacarandá leggings, and why.
Why we chose organic cotton
Most activewear is made from synthetic fibres like polyester and nylon. They're stretchy and quick-drying, and they're also plastic-based. We started Jacarandá in Calgary in 2019 because we wanted something different to wear every day: leggings made with organic cotton, a natural fibre that feels soft and breathable on your skin.
It's a choice about what you live in. Leggings aren't just for workouts anymore. They're what you wear to yoga, on a walk, to work from home, on a plane and out for coffee. If something is going to be on your body that many hours a week, we think the fabric matters.
The honest part about microfibres
Every fabric sheds some tiny fibres when it's washed, cotton included. The difference is what those fibres are made of. Researchers have measured that synthetic textiles like polyester, nylon and acrylic release plastic microfibres in the wash (study published in Environmental Science and Pollution Research), and laundry has been identified as a meaningful source of microplastics in the environment (Scientific Reports). Cotton fibres are plant-based, not plastic. Choosing natural fibres is one small, practical way to wear less plastic.
Designed to flatter, made to be worn
Choosing organic cotton was only the start. We wanted leggings you'd actually reach for:
- A shape that flatters. Our leggings are designed to follow and flatter your natural shape, with a soft, rounded waistband.
- Your length, not a guess. Our Fall 2026 leggings come in three lengths: 27" (Regular, up to 5'6"), 30" (Long, 5'7" to 5'9") and 33" (Tall, 5'10" and up). There's also a Mini Flare Pant in 32".
- Studio to street. They're easy to wear for yoga, pilates and walks, and they still look put together for errands, travel and weekends.
Buy less, buy better
Slow fashion, to us, simply means fewer pieces you love and wear often, instead of a drawer full of things you don't. That's why we focus on a small collection of leggings, pants and tops that mix and match, like our Fall Sets, which pair your favourite length with our Bra / Tank Top.
Our fall leggings are 95% organic cotton and 5% spandex for stretch and shape. They're pre-shrunk, pilling resistant and machine washable, so they're made for real life, not just the photos.
